| Just
before I left Guatemala to come to the United States, a group of
my friends had the desire to do something for the very underprivileged
children of Guatemala. Those children no one wanted and those who
were very difficult to care for. Some of these children became orphaned
during the 36 years of civil war in Guatemala, and they suffer from
severe mental and physical disabilities. There is no government agency
to oversee their welfare. Our group started small, but with great
determination to make a difference in these children's lives. I have
witnessed the many ways in which anini brings love, health care and education to these children.

I
became involved with this ch aritable
organization in 1987 and began looking for ways to support and raise
money for ANINI from my home in Chicago. I started
by hosting a Holiday Guatemalan Bazaar in my home.
Later on, I was able to host it in my office with the support of
co-workers and friends. The last and most successful Bazaar was at
the 720 Club, downtown Chicago thanks to the generosity
of Deb Tunney of Ann Sathers, who catered the event, and
her brother Ed Tunney, who donated the venue. As
I began to think of more viable ways to raise funds for anini,
I organized
the first tour of Guatemala. This tour showcases the vast beauty
of my homeland and allows the participants to visit anini.
This upcoming year will be my fourth year organizing the tour. And,
I must say,
each year the trip turns out better. The one just coming up will
be the best one yet! Will you join us? |
